November BaltiHerf at Max's on Broadway
Six Baltimore, DC, and York-area herfers gathered at Max's Mobtown Lounge on Saturday, November 18th. We spent about three and a half hours chatting, enjoying some very nice leaf, and sampling the nectar poured from the myriad of taps at the bar. Participants: David Farmer, Bob Hundemer, Harvey Green, Pete Skerrit, Chris Walter, and Rob Novak.
Holiday Herf at Martin Mayorga's "Mayorga Imports"
Martin Mayorga (of Mayorga Cigars and Coffee fame) hosted a hell of a herf in Rockville on December 16th. In his roasting/warehouse space, he assembled a group of about 50-60 folks for an evening of food, drink, music, and cigars.
A well-stocked drinks table included favorite bourbons, wines, rums, scotches, and beers. The catering company arrived with trays full of tamales, roast pig, paella, shredded beef and peppers, chicken and veggies in saffron and cumin sauce, fried plantains, and more. Martin brewed up some incredible coffee (I had a cup at around 8:30 - the caffeine high kept me wide awake until nearly 4 in the morning). Off to the side, a musical duo played various latin and jazz tunes.
To top it all off, Martin also provided a generous goodie bag consisting of a selection of Mayorga natural and maduro cigars, a chunky JR Ultimate No. 1 maduro, and a pound of fresh-roasted coffee. I gave away a CAO L'Anni eXtreme Churchill to a very grateful herfer at our table, and was gifted a La Luna Maduro Fuerte torp and a toro-sized Aristoff Black-Label. Both are sitting in the coolerdor waiting for the remnants of a recent cold to pass so that I may enjoy them fully.
BaltiHerf January at Fader's Cigar Pub (pictures)
January 13th, 2001 - Ten herfers showed for an afternoon of drinks and smokes at the cigar pub in A. Fader's South Calvert Street store. Those who attended were: Rob Novak, Chris Walter, Doc Francer, Harvey Green, Bob Hundemer, David Farmer, Pete Skeritt, Roy Knapp, Michael Fermanis, and Marc Schmitz. I hope I got everyone! Mike F. took a bunch of photos. Hopefully, I'll be able to get in contact with him, get them scanned, and post them here.
The staff at Fader's didn't exactly know what to expect. It's kinda depressing to realize that no-one has herfs in Baltimore. At the same time, it's exciting and gratifying to be bringing folks together in this area for the first time. Bill, one of the store managers and our bartender, was impressed with the atmosphere. He really dug the idea of just getting folks together for no particular reason except to have some cigars, consume liquid libations, and socialize.
I can't say enough about the bar space in the Fader's store. Like the rest of the facility, it's just perfect. The bar's got high ceilings, the same Greek-revival/Art Deco feel as the rest of the place, and a great atmosphere. All attending seemed to be very pleased with the location. The only thing that I wish had gone better was the impromptu "bar-room box pass". I guess it would have been better to have given some advance notice ;-).
I, personally, got to meet more folks in person that I've only "read" on ASC. Doc, Mike, Roy, Marc - it was great to see you there. Harvey, Dave, Pete, and Bob - it was good to see you all again. I'm already thinking about the next one. Bill made a recommendation for a place owned by a friend - Antney's Bar and Grill. I'll be giving them a call soon and look to set something up in (probably) March.
By the way, if anyone else reading this wants to take the initiative to arrange a herf of their own, let me know and I'll post it here on the events page.
Until next time,
Rob
